Established in 1971 as a small family firm, we have grown to become one of the largest and most respected plumbing companies in the UK. We specialise in installing, servicing and maintaining central heating systems on large-scale new build projects and now have a team of more than 140 plumbers working on numerous major housing developments across the South West region.

Our headquarters is a modern 1200sq ft two storey office building on the outskirts of Okehampton, Devon.

As well as our management team we now employ a squad of more than 140 highly qualified professional plumbers working on projects across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, and we run a fleet of 75 vehicles and have a very active Apprenticeship programme.
We also have our own buyers and a dedicated depot for the storage of materials and stock. This means we can guarantee a speedy delivery rate when it matters and provide a fast and efficient service for our clients.
The company was launched in Okehampton in 1971 by husband-and-wife team Brian and Mary Barkwell. Nine years later they were joined by sons Robert and Michael, confirming BJ Barkwell & Sons as a true family firm.
Throughout the 1980s and 90s the family continued to build and grow the business, until in 1996 BJ Barkwell & Sons won its first major contract from a commercial client and completed a new build for Taylor Wimpey involving several hundred houses and 25 different house designs.
This sizeable project signified a turning point for BJ Barkwell & Sons, since when we have specialised in large-scale contracts for many of the major UK house builders on developments that typically involve the construction of hundreds of houses.
Despite our major expansion, Barkwell Plumbing and Heating remains to this day a family business, run on the same values established by Brian and Mary Barkwell in the 1970s: approachable, friendly and reliable and offering a consistently high-quality service on every job from start to finish. These values have allowed us to develop and maintain excellent relationships and partnerships with our long-term client base.
